Introduction
Care and support program offers on going support and outreach services, volunteer home care, community centre services, where patient and clients requiring these services travel to centre to receive the services.

Outreach services: a healthy worker or social worker travels to various places within a community to provide various types of preventive, care and support services within a community on regular basis

Volunteer home care: community selects a member then is trained in home based care services and works as a volunteer within the community. This person is supported by professional health worker, through supervision and other technical support

Care and Support Programme
One of the programs that brings YONECO close to the people is care and support. In order to strengthen the support systems on sustainable basis YONECO has very innovative programs to ensure continued food security and health life. The program has a number of challenges that require collective responsibilities to create the necessary environment for vibrant social economic development for all vulnerable groups at community level. Therefore, continued human and material resources will be critical for improved life at community level

Goal
To improve the management capacity of the orphans and vulnerable women and children (OVC) and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) to respond effectively at community level

Strategies
Life skills development for the orphans, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA’s), volunteers and care givers at community level

  • Comprehensive health education programme on HIV/AIDS and other health related issues at community level
  • Food security and economic empowerment initiatives for people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS

Kindergarten
The program offers basic education support to vulnerable children through education services like Kindergarten which provides elementary education. Chinamwali AIDS and orphan care is a community based organization trying to support the orphans and vulnerable children through early childhood education.

  • Orphans and vulnerable children development initiatives at community level.
  • Community care of people living with HIV/AIDS, chronically ill and orphans at local level.

Psychotherapy approaches in vulnerable children
An innovation to child care is psychotherapy using art therapy where children express their thoughts and feelings in drawings. The media of expression comprises of a wide variety of art materials, for example paints, clay and batik, to create a visual representation of their thoughts and feelings.

Arts therapy can be individual activity but is often very successfully in group situations.  It is good for managers and staff under pressure, people generally stressed, with mental health problems, are those with severe learning difficulties, etc

Activities
Conduct intensive health education on HIV/AIDS behaviour change and other related diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, cancer etc for communities to encourage health seeking behaviours including workplace initiatives

  • Train community care givers, guardians and parents on good  nutrition and local food supplies management and palliative care
  • Conduct training in alternative livelihoods, enterprise development, agro-based activities and irrigation techniques for food security initiatives for families affected and infected by HIV/AIDS
  • Source and distribute relief food to families affected by HIV/AIDS and hunger in various areas
  • Train teachers and community members in psych – social skills to  support orphans vulnerable children
  • Establish alternative schooling e.g. creating links with formal education providers for material support.
